We recently announced the introduction of the Single-Discipline (SD) Performance-Based Assessment (PBA) Pilot , which will be administered by the Canadian Alliance of Dental Technology Regulators (CADTR) for Alberta-based applicants in the fall of 2026 at NAIT. The SD framework builds on the full-discipline Performance-Based Assessment (PBA) existing assessment stations. It is intended to support a flexible, fair and proportionate registration pathway for Dental Technicians (DTs) in Alberta. It is designed to recognize focused expertise, while maintaining the high entry-to-practice standards expected of the profession.
Who Can Participate?
Current Registrants: Dental Technician (DT) registrants may use this option to expand their scope of practice by adding additional disciplines to their authorized practice. If you are currently registered in Alberta as a Dental Technician, you are not required to complete the knowledge-based assessment (KBA).
New Applicants: New applicants seeking DT registration in Alberta can apply directly to CADTR for credentialing and assessment services. Please read on for instructions on how to apply.
Each single-discipline PBA includes targeted assessment stations, allowing applicants to demonstrate competence in a streamlined format.

The Value of the Single-Discipline Performance-Based Assessment
The majority of the CDTA’s complaints and disciplinary proceedings stem from DT registrants providing services outside of their authorized scope of practice. For instance, a DT authorized in dentures (RFP) is not permitted to offer services for partial dentures (RPP) under their license. Such actions violate relevant legislation and can lead to disciplinary measures by the CDTA. It is crucial for all registrants to strictly adhere to their scope of practice.
The SD PBA offers DT registrants a crucial opportunity to broaden your scope of practice by demonstrating practical competence across additional disciplines of dental technology.

How to Apply
Current Registrants: If you are a Dental Technician (DT) currently registered with the CDTA, you will apply for the SD PBA through a referral from the CDTA to the Canadian Alliance of Dental Technology Regulators (CADTR). Once your referral is complete, you will apply directly to CADTR to participate in the SD PBA. Please contact tara@cdta.ca to request a letter of referral.
New Applicants: New applicants seeking DT registration in Alberta can apply directly to CADTR for credentialing and assessment services. These applicants will apply for registration with the CDTA through the appropriate registration pathway and can find more information about how to register as a DT in Alberta on our website. New applicants can apply through CADTR’s applicant portal and should contact CADTR directly for assistance with registering for the SD PBA. Additionally, new applicants need to complete a knowledge-based assessment in addition to the SD PBA.
