We’re excited to announce the introduction of the Single-Discipline (SD) Performance-Based Assessment (PBA). It is intended to support a flexible, fair and proportionate registration pathway for Dental Technicians (DTs) in Alberta.

In partnership with the Canadian Alliance of Dental Technology Regulators (CADTR), the College will pilot this new approach in fall 2026 at NAIT. This pilot will enable new applicants to complete the Performance-Based Assessment (PBA) within a single discipline, better aligning the assessment with their practice. New applicants will also be required to complete the Knowledge-Based Assessment (KBA).

The CDTA Registration, Education and Competence Committee has developed a new single-discipline assessment framework, now formally approved by Council and adopted by the Canadian Alliance of Dental Technology Regulators (CADTR), for Alberta-based applicants. This milestone reflects significant collaboration and innovation.

The Single-Discipline framework builds off the existing assessment stations, which is the full-discipline Performance-Based Assessment (PBA) developed by CADTR.

The Single-Discipline PBA is designed to recognize focused expertise, while maintaining the high entry-to-practice standards expected of the profession. Each Single-Discipline PBA includes targeted assessment stations, allowing applicants to demonstrate competence in a streamlined format.
