CDTA Regulated Categories of Membership

1. Dental Technologist

  • Has obtained a diploma from a Dental Technology Training Program of at least 2 years, that has been approved by the CDTA.
  • Has successfully completed practical examinations in all the following competencies of Dental Technology approved by the CDTA.

2. Dental Technician

  • Has obtained a diploma from a Dental Technology Training Program, of at least 2 years, that has been approved by the CDTA College.
  • Has successfully completed a practical examination in one or more of the 4 competencies of Dental Technology but not all four.

3. Courtesy Dental Technologist

  • A Dental Technologist who is registered as a dental technologist in good standing in another jurisdiction who requires registration in Alberta on a temporary basis for a specified purpose approved by the Registrar and who satisfies the Registrar of the person’s competence to provide the services related to the specified purpose.
  • The term of the registration of a member registered on the dental technologist courtesy register or on the dental technician courtesy register is 12 months or less, as specified by the Registrar.
  • A member who is registered on the dental technologist courtesy register or on the dental technician courtesy register must remain registered in the jurisdiction in which the member was registered at the time of the member’s application for registration under this section.

4. Courtesy Dental Technician

  • A Dental Technician who is registered as a dental technologist in good standing in another jurisdiction who requires registration in Alberta on a temporary basis for a specified purpose approved by the Registrar and who satisfies the Registrar of the person’s competence to provide the services related to the specified purpose.
  • The term of the registration of a member registered on the dental technologist courtesy register or on the dental technician courtesy register is 12 months or less, as specified by the Registrar.
  • A member who is registered on the dental technologist courtesy register or on the dental technician courtesy register must remain registered in the jurisdiction in which the member was registered at the time of the member’s application for registration under this section.

CDTA Non-Regulated Categories of Membership

5. Practicum Student

  • Is an individual who is enrolled in the minimum two year Practicum Student Program as approved by Council.
  • Is an individual who is under the direct supervision of a Registered Dental Technologist or Registered Dental Technician
  • Is an individual who completes the appropriate forms prescribed by the Council and pays an annual registration fee determined by the Council.

6. Educational Student

  • Is an individual who is enrolled as an educational student in a dental technology program of at least 2 years, that has been approved by the CDTA.
  • Is an individual who is under the direct supervision of a Registered Dental Technologist or Registered Dental Technician
  • Is an individual who completes the appropriate forms prescribed by the Council and pays an annual registration fee determined by the Council.
  • In accordance with the Dental Technologists Profession Regulation, upon graduation and prior to registration without conditions, Educational Students must successfully complete Practical Examinations administered by the CDTA.
  • The Practical Examinations evaluate the candidates to ensure that:

                   1) The health and safety of the public is protected

                   2) Graduates have met the qualifications to enter practice

                   3) Graduates can demonstrate the competence required for registration as a regulated member of the profession of Dental Technology

                   4) Graduates have the ability to fabricate dental prosthesis that meet the competency required by the Profession

Practical Exam projects to be completed are Removable Complete Prosthodontics-Complete Dentures, Removable Partial Prosthodontics-Partial Dentures, Fixed Prosthodontics-Crown and Bridge and Ceramics and Fixed and Removable Orthodontics Appliances.

  • Applicants who pursue Registration as a Dental Technologist (RDT) must pass all disciplines of the practical examination.
  •  Applicants who pursue Registration as a Dental Technician (DT) must pass 1, 2 or 3 disciplines of the practical examination.

7. Dental Laboratory Technician Assistant 

  • Is an individual who is employed in the Profession of Dental Technology, who has an interest in the profession of dental technology, performing part and not the whole of a competency of a Dental Technologist or Dental Technician.
  • Is an individual who is under the direct supervision of a Registered Dental Technologist or Registered Dental Technician
  • Individuals to include dental reception, dental office management, and other office staff who meet the following requirements:
    • Individuals who do not meet the requirements for registration as a Regulated Member under the HPA.
    • Is an individual who completes the appropriate forms prescribed by the Council and pays an annual registration fee determined by the Council.
