College of Dental Technologists of Alberta
THE COLLEGE
Dental Technologists and
Dental Technicians became
a self-regulating group of individuals with the
establishment of the Alberta Association of Dental
Technicians (AADT) receiving Proclamation November
1, 1990, under the Dental Disciplines Act, Bill 44, in
the
Province of Alberta. The Associations’ responsibilities
were then transferred to the College of Dental
Technologists of Alberta under the Proclamation of the
Health Professions Act, 1999 and the Dental Technologist
Profession Regulation Proclamation October 19th
2004..
A Council of the College governs its
members in a manner that protects and serves the public
interest. The Council consists of six
(6) regulated members and two (2) public members. The
Council is represented by the President and appoints a
Registrar. The Council hires an Executive Director to
oversee the day-to-day operations of the Colleges’
administrative and management duties that include hiring
staff, liasoning with committees, representing the
College on various associations and agencies; chairing
of council meetings; and most importantly networking and
supporting our members and encouraging new member
participation in the College. The Regulated Council
Members are elected by the Colleges’ regulated
membership; other members may be elected or appointed by
the Council.
Once the Council has been selected and a President
appointed or elected, the Council then appoints an
Executive Committee.
The Colleges’ calendar year is January 1 - December 31
with renewals being sent out in early September.
All late renewals are subject to administrative fees.
Membership is divided into the following categories:
Registered Dental Technologist, Registered Dental
Technician, Educational Student, Practicum Student,
Dental Laboratory Technician Assistant, Inactive Member, and Dental
Laboratory Owner Member.
Under the Health Professions
Act (2000);
Mandatory registration
46(1) A person must apply for registration if the person
(a) is qualified to meet the requirements of section
28(2) for registration as a regulated member, and
(b) intends to provide any or all of the following:
(i) professional services directly to the public
(ii) the manufacture of dental appliances or conducting
of laboratory tests that are used by other regulated
members to provide professional services directly to the
public
(iii) food and nutrition professional services that are
used by other regulated members and individuals to
provide services directly to the public
(iv) the teaching of the practice of a regulated
profession to regulated members or students of the
regulated profession
(v) the supervision of regulated members who provide
professional services to the public.
46 (2) If a registrar is of the opinion that a person
who is not a regulated member meets or may meet the
requirements of subsection (1)(a) with respect to the
college and provides any services described in
subsection (1)(b), the registrar may give that person a
written request to apply for registration.
Registered Dental Technologist (RDT). Protected Title
Those individuals who have successfully met all the
qualifications of registration and have
successfully fulfilled all Prerequisites, and have
completed all Theoretical and Practical
examination process requirements. Successful
Technologist candidates have Inter-provincial
recognition.
Registered Dental Technician (DT). Protected Title
Those individuals who have successfully met all the
qualifications of registration and have
successfully fulfilled all Academic Prerequisites,
completed all Theoretical examinations and passed 1,2,3
of the Practical examination process requirements in the
Province of Alberta.
Educational Students Members
Individuals who are currently enrolled in a program of
Health Science of Dental Technology
Studies approved by the Council or students who have
graduated from a program of Studies
approved by the Council.
Practicum Students Members
Individuals who are permanently employed in the
Profession of Dental Technology in the Province of
Alberta for two (2) years and are currently assisting in
performing some of the duties of a dental technician.
These persons must have fulfilled the prerequisite
academic requirements as well as having
successfully completed a program and testing of
Comprehensive Theoretical Studies approved by
the Council.
After successful completion of the prerequisites and
theoretical components and after having
completed a Practicum, (Study Guide & Competency
Profile, 4000 hrs Practical
Experience), the practicum student may proceed to
challenging the Practical Examination of their
choice toward being recognized as a regulated and
registered member of the Profession.
Dental Laboratory Technician Assistant
Individuals who are permanently employed in the
Profession of Dental Technology in the Province of
Alberta, and are not currently assisting in performing
the fundamental duties of a dental technologist /
technician.
After a period of time, these persons may choose to
advance to a Practicum Student member
fulfilling all the prerequisites of a Practicum Member
Inactive Members
Individuals who are not presently employed in the Dental
Technology Profession in the
Province of Alberta, and who will not be involved in any
aspect of the fabrication of a dental
prosthesis during the current registration year (January
1 - December 31).
These individuals could be members who are residing out
of the Province of Alberta, retired members who are no
longer are providing the services of a Regulated member,
members who have taken a leave of absence from the
profession for a time, or members who have been
recognized as honorary members for service.
The activities of the College under the HEALTH
PROFESSIONS ACT are governed by the DENTAL TECHNOLOGIST
PROFESSION REGULATIONS and member interests are governed
by the
BY-LAWS developed by the Council and voted on by the
regulated membership. The CODE OF ETHICS, prepared by
the members of the CDTA, defines responsible
professional behavior in
situations specific to the HEALTH SCIENCE PROFESSION OF
Dental Technology.
STANDARDS OF PRACTICE are developed by the members of
the CDTA to assist its members in the quality management
of Dental Technologist and Technician services.
