DENTAL TECHNOLOGISTS PROFESSION REGULATION


1. Restricted activities authorization

A regulated member registered on the dental technologist general register that has completed a approved 2-year diploma training program in dental technology and practical examinations approved by the Council and completed training:

     1. In Standard First Aid / Level C, CPR
     2. In Dental Asepsis for Dental Technologists / Dental Technicians
     3. In Patient-Care responsibilities for Dental Technologists and / Dental Technicians


A regulated member registered on the dental technologist general register January 1st 2005, that has not completed an approved 2 year diploma training program in dental technology, but has successfully completed practical examinations approved by the Council must in addition as a prerequisite to the following complete a program of studies in Dental Anatomy approved by the Council.

     1. In Standard First Aid / Level C, CPR
     2. In Dental Asepsis for Dental Technologists / Dental Technicians
     3. In Patient-Care responsibilities for Dental Technologists and / Dental Technicians


May upon application to the Registrar be authorized to perform the following restricted activities for the purpose of colour matching or determining a preliminary fit:

     a. fitting fixed or removable partial or complete dentures;
     b. fitting fixed or removable orthodontic or periodontal appliances;
     c. fitting implant-supported prostheses.



2. Limitations on performing restricted activities

Despite an authorization a regulated member

     (a) must not perform a restricted activity that the member is not competent to perform,
     (b) must not perform a restricted activity that is related to an irreversible intra-oral procedure,
     (c) may perform only those restricted activities that are appropriate to the members practice permit.

3. Restricted activities direction

Prior to performing a restricted activity, a regulated member, authorized by the Registrar, must have a written direction from a dentist or denturist

     (a) who is authorized to perform the restricted activity, and
     (b) who is responsible for determining the final fit of an appliance or denture.

4. Procedures that are not restricted activities

The following procedures are not considered of an irreversible nature and are not restricted to the activity of a registered dental technologist or dental technician. However the regulated member must NOT perform the following activities unless they are competent and certified to do so:
     (a) taking any form of intra-oral impressions
     (b) taking any form of intra-oral maxillary-mandibular occlusal relations
     (c) or any form of intra-oral occlusal adjustments.
  
5. Approved competency training programs

The Council of the College has approved all competency training programming for restricted and non-restricted procedure activities. These programs are provided to the Profession by the Northern Alberta Institute of Alberta, Health Science Dental Technologist Program. Professional partnership programs with the CDTA Professional Education and Programming Board and NAIT are also available.
