CDTA Regulated Categories
of Licensure
1. Dental Technologist
Has obtained a diploma from a Dental Technology
Training Program of at least 2 years, that has been
approved by the CDTA.
Has successfully completed practical examinations in
all the following competencies of Dental Technology
approved by the CDTA.
2. Dental Technician
Has obtained a diploma from a Dental Technology
Training Program, of at least 2 years, that has been
approved by the CDTA College.
Has successfully completed a practical examination in
one or more of the 4 competencies of Dental Technology
but not all four.
3. Courtesy Dental Technologist
A Dental Technologist who is registered as a dental
technologist in good
standing in another jurisdiction who requires
registration in Alberta on a
temporary basis for a specified purpose approved by the
Registrar and who
satisfies the Registrar of the persons competence to
provide the services related
to the specified purpose.
4. Courtesy Dental Technician
A Dental Technician who is registered as a dental
technologist in good standing in another jurisdiction
who requires registration in Alberta on a temporary
basis for a specified purpose approved by the Registrar
and who satisfies the Registrar of the persons
competence to provide the services related to the
specified purpose.
CDTA Non-Regulated
Categories of Membership
5. Practicum Student
Is an individual who is
enrolled in the Modular Training Program provided by the
CDTA Dental Technology Training Centre approved by the
CDTA.
Is an individual who is under the direct supervision
of a Registered Dental Technologist or Registered Dental
Technician
Is an individual who completes the appropriate forms
prescribed by the Council and pays an annual
registration fee determined by the Council.
6. Educational Student
Is an individual who is enrolled as an educational
student in a dental technology program of at least 2
years, that has been approved by the CDTA.
Is an individual who is under the direct supervision
of a Registered Dental Technologist or Registered Dental
Technician
Is an individual who completes the appropriate forms
prescribed by the Council and pays an annual
registration fee determined by the Council.
7. Out of Province Dental Technologist
Has obtained a diploma
from a Dental Technology Training Program, of at least 2
years, that has been approved by the CDTA.
Has successfully completed practical examinations in
all the following competencies of Dental Technology
approved by the CDTA.
Is an individual who does not provide professional
services within the Province of Alberta.
Is an individual who does not hold a current Practice
Permit within the Province of Alberta.
Is an individual who completes the appropriate forms
prescribed by the Council and pays an annual
registration fee determined by the Council.
8. Out of Province Dental Technician
Has obtained a diploma from a Dental Technology
Training Program, of at least 2 years, that has been
approved by the CDTA College.
Has successfully completed a practical examination in
one or more of the 4 competencies of Dental Technology
but not all four.
Is an individual who does not provide professional
services within the Province of Alberta.
Is an individual who does not hold a current Practice
Permit within the Province of Alberta.
Is an individual who completes the appropriate forms
prescribed by the Council and pays an annual
registration fee determined by the Council.
9. Retired Dental Technologist
Has obtained a diploma from a Dental Technology
Training Program, of at least 2 years, that has been
approved by the CDTA.
Has successfully completed practical examinations in
all the following competencies of Dental Technology
approved by the CDTA.
Is an individual who has not been a Regulated Member
with the CDTA for 5 or more years.
Is an individual who does not engage in the Practice
of Dental Technology in the Province of Alberta.
Is an individual who does not hold a current Practice
Permit within the Province of Alberta.
Is an individual who completes the appropriate forms
prescribed by the Council and pays an annual
registration fee determined by the Council.
10. Retired Dental Technician
Has obtained a diploma from a Dental Technology
Training Program, of at least 2 years, that has been
approved by the CDTA College.
Has successfully completed a practical examination in
one or more of the 4 competencies of Dental Technology
but not all four.
Is an individual who has not been a Regulated Member
with the CDTA for 5 or more years.
Is an individual who does not engage in the Practice
of Dental Technology in the Province of Alberta.
Is an individual who does not hold a current Practice
Permit within the Province of Alberta.
Is an individual who completes the appropriate forms
prescribed by the Council and pays an annual
registration fee determined by the Council.
11. In-Active Dental Technologist
Has obtained a diploma
from a Dental Technology Training Program, of at least 2
years, that has been approved by the CDTA.
Has successfully completed practical examinations in
all the following competencies of Dental Technology
approved by the CDTA.
Is an individual who does not provide professional
services within the Province of Alberta.
Is an individual who temporarily does not hold a
current Practice Permit within the Province of Alberta.
Is an individual who completes the appropriate forms
prescribed by the Council and pays an annual
registration fee determined by the Council.
12. In-Active Dental Technician
Has obtained a diploma
from a Dental Technology Training Program, of at least 2
years, that has been approved by the CDTA College.
Has successfully completed a practical examination in
one or more of the 4 competencies of Dental Technology
but not all four.
Is an individual who does not provide professional
services within the Province of Alberta.
Is an individual who temporarily does not hold a
current Practice Permit within the Province of Alberta.
Is an individual who completes the appropriate forms
prescribed by the Council and pays an annual
registration fee determined by the Council.
13. Dental Laboratory Technician Assistant
Practice Permit License
Is an individual who is
employed in the Profession of Dental Technology, who has
an interest in the profession of dental technology,
performing part and not whole of a competency of a
Dental Technologist or Dental Technician.
Is an individual who is under the direct supervision
of a Registered Dental Technologist or Registered Dental
Technician
Individuals to include dental reception, dental office
management and other office staff who meet the following
requirements:
a) Is a individuals do not meet the requirements for
registration as a Regulated Member under the HPA.
b) Is an individual who completes the appropriate forms
prescribed by the Council and pays an annual registration fee determined by the Council.
14. Honorary (Lifetime) Member
The category of membership in the College designated as
honorary (lifetime) member may be granted to an
individual who has made outstanding contributions to the
College or to the Profession of Dental Technology and
who meets one or more of the following requirements.
a) Is an individual who may or may not be registered as
a Regulated Member or hold a Practice Permit under the
HPA.
b) Is an individual who has been registered as a
Regulated Member or has held a Practice permit for a
period of 30 years and is now retired.
c) Is an individual who is nominated by at least five
Regulated Members who shall sign a petition stating
their reasons for nominating the individual and shall
submit the petition to Council for a vote.
d) The individuals nomination must receive unanimous
support of all Councillors
e) The voting members of the College must also
approve the individuals honorary (lifetime membership
at the AGM by Ordinary Resolution.
15. Associate Member
The Category of membership in the CDTA designated as
associate member may be granted to an individual who has
an interest in the profession of Dental Technology and
who meets the following requirements.
a) Is an individual who does not meet the requirements
for registration as Regulated Member under the HPA.
b) Is an individual who completes the appropriate forms
prescribed by the Council and pays an annual
registration fee determined by the Council.
16. CDTA Masters of Dental Technology
CDTA Masters recognition MAS are for those Regulated
Members who are in good standing with the CDTA and have
completed all current continuing education programming
approved by the CDTA and has a comprehensive knowledge
of Standards of Practice meeting the Operational
Requirements for the Profession of Dental Technologists
and respecting the laws of the Health Professions Act,
Laws of Health Canada, Dental Technologists Professional
Regulation of Alberta, the Bylaws of the College of
Dental Technologists of Alberta and is aware of their
legislative responsibilities as Professional Members.
Is an
individual who is registered as a Registered Dental
Technologist and holds a current Practice Permit with
the College of Dental Technologists under the HPA of
Alberta.
Is an individual who has been registered as a
Regulated Member or an held a Practice permit for a
period of no less than 5 years and
Completes a Professional Examination as prescribed by
the Council
Is an individual who is nominated by at least five
Regulated Members who shall sign a petition stating
their reasons for nominating the individual and shall
submit the petition to Council for an interview and
vote.
The individuals nomination must receive unanimous
support of all Councillors.
